Can only Connect to RDP Server from One PC - No Other PCs can Connect?!?
-
I setup RDP Servers on a Windows 7 Pro (Port 3390) and Windows XP Pro (Port 3389) computer in a small office, and configured proper port-forwarding in their router. I also configured necessary Firewall permissions for RDP access to the servers. I assumed the RDP was working properly since I VNC'd to my office computer and connected to each RDP server from that remote workstation using the normal connection method: [WANIP]:[RDP Port #], and it worked fine. It prompted me for the user/pass, which I provided, and then I was logged in. My client informed me when he got home he was unable to connect. I tried connecting from several other computers running both Windows XP and 7, but all failed to connect. I then reattempted to connect to the RDP servers from my office PC I had tried the night before and it worked perfectly. I have tried disabling the firewall and antivirus on all the computers its failing to connect on, but it doesnt make a difference. I also added the Everyone user to the list of allowed users on the RDP servers, but again it makes no difference. It would be easier to diagnose if no computers could connect, but I find it very strange that my office PC running XP SP3 is able to connect, and it wouldnt have any special permissions to connect to this company's RDP servers beyond that which any other random PC would have. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Answer:
1) Disable windows firewalls on your RDP servers. You don't need them in your little network since your router has a built-in hardware firewall. It's good for troubleshooting to have them disabled. 2) Make sure yet again that you have particular ports opened to particular local IP addresses of your RDP servers and that your RDP servers are working on static IP addresses (it can be either done from PC side or the network router side). 3) Make sure the Windows 7 server has checked "allow connections from computers running any version of remote desktop". It can be found by right clicking of My Computer ---> Properties ---> Remote Settings. 4) It must work if you have met the above terms. 5) If you want to make multiple connections to your RDP servers at the same time (i.e. 10 remote connections from 10 different clients at the same time) then you need to patch a file named termsrv.dll at the server PC. It can be done quickly with the tool that you can download from here: http://windows7themes.net/termsrv-dll-patch-for-windows-7-64-bit.html

Any chance that the machine in your office is disconnecting without ending the session? It could reconnect but no other machine could open a new connection. Disconnect your office machine, then run netstat on the RDP servers and see if the port is Listening or if it is still has a connection open. Look at the event logs of both the RDP servers and the connecting machines. If this is a protocol or authentication issue there must be an error condition on one end or the other that should throw up an event.
