Hi There, Assuming both laptops have wireless adapters you can connect one laptop using an ethernet cable and set up a wireless network on it with internet sharing enabled. Next you will set up the second laptop to use that network. That is called a "peer to peer" network. You also can enable file and printer sharing. Having said that; although it is possible to use a peer to peer network it is a royal pain to use for an extended time. Windows is not very good at maintaining the network and you will have to redo everything every week or so. My advice is to buy a wireless router (you will be glad you did). The link below is for a wireless G router from Tiger Direct for $30- . A wireless G router is plenty fast for most needs. That was my solution for wireless networking headaches. Hope this helps, Al

IF your broadband modem is NOT a Ether net switch also, then you will need an Ethernet switch. = Linksys EZXS55W EtherFast 5-Port Switch - http://homestore.cisco.com/en-us/switches/linskys-EZXS55W-Etherfast-10/100-5-port_stcVVproductId53934575VVcatId552009VVviewprod.htm
You need to purchase a router, switch or hub. A wireless router is a good investment, a switch is good for wired networks, and a hub is a last resort. You may be able to connect the laptop is a series manner, but this is bad practice and requires more extensive knowledge of computers, networking, and the hardware between the computers.
if u r connecting one laptop through broadband cable then to connect other laptop to the same network u need a software called conectifity. search this software in google its free of cost. install it and it will setup a network for u ;;... p.s it also support wap2 password protection..
well if your using a DSL line then you should have a router because DSL line comes with the phone.... But if you have a WAN port line you don't need any router just few steps in PPPoE setup and then you can use but you can't use a wireless in WAN port you have to connect the cable so if you want wireless you need to get a WAN port router for this....
