How can I find out how many GBs I use a month on Internet?

Can anyone help find a way to block my wireless internet service from other people?

  • I have been having trouble with my internet connection recently. I called out a tech from my cable company to see if everything was connected right with my internet service. He couldn't find any problems with the modem, cable lines, or my computer. I have a month old computer and there should be absolutely no problem with it. I got disgusted one night while trying to do my state taxes online. The internet connection kept on being interrupted. So I got an idea to see how my network connection was doing. I opened up the network connection symbol on the toolbar and was floored. There were 8 different ones listed. I got curious and called my cable company at that moment. I talked to a representative and she thinks that since I'm living in a tiny 2 bedroom apartment that may other people are accessing my wireless internet service. It is protected by a password that the company gave me to use. I'm thinking that it probably can be pretty easy to get into the service with any computer or wireless card. I have very good anti-spy, anti-virus, and a strong firewall program installed on my computer. I'm just upset that someone maybe using my internet service for free. I pay a lot for having turbo wireless which makes up half of my cable bill. We need the wireless in this apartment because of no other cable outlets for my other computer in the bedrooms. We have a wall switch but it can only be used for cable TV. I had a good idea to turn off the modem on Sunday when I lost the internet signal for the third time. I heard people going down the stairs swearing because they lost their internet connection and couldn't play their games online. I'm moving from this apartment in the summer. The main question though is what can I do to limit the range or stop others from using my signal. I don't mind if my neighbor next to me uses the internet signal. She is a single mother of 2 boys while her husband is overseas in the Army. I just want to know that I can use what I'm paying for. When the others use my signal then it also does something to cause my internet phone not to work. Thanks

I'm not convinced anyone is stealing your bandwidth, although it's possible. Your ISP should be willing to help you with this. It's illegal to do this, and it's costing them money also. Your modem probably has a network monitor page which will tell you if anyone else is connecting. You can also change to a stronger type of encryption (WPA) which is much more difficult to hack. Call your ISP's support people and get them to solve this for you.

Hi if you are looking to watch some free tv I found this software while looking for a alternative to cable

Well, it is not possibe really to limit the range. However, adding a WEP or WPA encryption on a wireless network (acts as a password to wireless). I would HIGHLY prefer WPA2 or WPA over WEP. There are also other more sophisticated and hard to setup methods such as Mac Address filter (only certain devices can use it) and disabling SSID broadcast (computer must wireless network name before connection.) As for the Internet phone, I am not knowledgeable in that area, but too many data connections COULD be the problem with in,

Change your wireless access password and your router config password...Use a letter/number combination password, much better if you will add other [email protected]

The list on the toolbar is the number of other people in the area running their own routers. NOT connected to yours. Check the channels in use and the signal strengths. If a machine near you is on the same channel it will conflict. Do NOT give ANYONE the wireless key, even the young mother. You would be surprised how people like to give these away to everyone they know. Change the key if she has it. It is difficult to crack the key, so unlikely anyone has. Set it as WPA with a long passphrase
