Can I use simple file sharing with my Windows XP Home Edition version 2002 SP2? (more details inside)?
-
Awhile ago I was following the XBOX 360 guide http://www.xbox.com/en-US/pcsetup/alldownloads.htm for file sharing between my PC and game console. After downgrading from SP3 to SP2 (as the tech guy on the XBOX 360 help line told me to) the tech told me I had the wrong version. I realized the guide was only for Windows XP Media Center Edition or whatever. I wasted so much time because the guide has a "Windows XP" sub-guide, but didn't specify what kind of Windows XP it had to be. Grrr. So now Im not sure whether I need SP3 or SP2. Also- Im following this guide http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304040 on how to configure file sharing. Heres the part that doesnt work on my PC: 1. Double-click My Computer on the desktop. 2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options. 3. Click the View tab, and then *select the Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended) check box to turn on Simple File Sharing*. (Clear this check box to turn off this feature.) There is no Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended) check box that I can see. Thank you so much for taking the time to assist me. I have been trying to network my house for the longest time.

Answer:
XP can participate in two kinds of networks. In a Domain structure each file has multiple properties that can be set individually for each user (Read, Write, Change etc.). In a workgroup (simple file sharing) a file has only two states shared/not shared and a password. When you aren't offered the choice it just means you are in a workgroup. Simple file sharing is your only choice.
