Ethernet cable splitter?

  • I got a 1 to 5 ethernet cable splitter because my router's jacked up and my playstation won't work on it, but our laptops do. So I got this splitter and ran the cable from the modem to the ethernet in port on the splitter and got two ethernet cables, ran one to the router and one to the playstation. When I reset my modem and turned on my playstation, neither the router or the playstation were connecting to the internet. So I took out the router cable and reset the modem again and the playstation worked perfectly. I took the cable out of the playstation and the router worked perfectly. What is going on?? I spent 40 bucks on this splitter, so I want it do work. Is it not splitting the signal properly or is the modem not cooperating because the cable is being split? Or is it neither of those? I reaaally need help. I can't keep unplugging the router every time I want to play video games, because then my family can't get online. Helppp!

    You most likely purchased an Ethernet switch, when connecting a switch to a router you can't use a normal ethernet cable called a straight thru cable, you need to buy a specific cable called a cross-over cable.

As for playstation going through a router... Routers make good firewalls. You need to open a port on the router so that play station traffic can get through it. This essentially removes the PS3 from being behind the firewall of the router.
