What is the gateway this routing table?

  • When is the gateway 'On-link' or an actual IP address? I have 'On-link' when the router is actually DIRECTLY connected to the host. What would the gateway be when the router isnt directly connected to the host and must go through another router?

    When your computer wants to send traffic to another computer, your computer first decides if you are trying to send that traffic to another computer on your local network. If the traffic is supposed to go to a different network, it is "routed" to the "default gateway" which sends that traffic to its destination by directing it over the internet (typically). The gateway sits between your private network and the public network (the internet). If you have to go through another gateway, the same rules apply. The public side of gw 2 connects to the private side of gw 1. The public side of gw 1 connects to the internet. The default gateway of gw 2 (public side) is the ip address of the private side of gw 1. The default gateway for your computer would be the ip address of the private side of gw 2.
