  • Answer:

As other noted you need proprietary drivers for connecting to the Internet. Linux Mint comes some drivers but not all. You chose a cheap linux instead of a paid one that comes with all the dirvers and as you noticed it works fine in Windows 7 EXACTLY because you paid for it and it comes with proprietary drivers. Windows 7 isnt free it is expensive. Forget about installing drivers yourself unless you are a programmer. All we know is we both run linux in our company and privately and it comes WITH ALL THE DRIVERS zero configuration install and all drivers wifi, video, codecs, windows compatible components works right out of the box. You could try to connect the computer to an ethernet connection and install from the repository. RICK

Here is the Official Ubuntu Wireless Documentation (also applies to Linux Mint) Troubleshooting/Howto/General https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/WiFiHowTo Linux Mint 11 Release Notes/User Guide http://linuxmint.com/rel_katya.php LUg.

You could need proprietary drivers for your wifi device, Ubuntu and others don't ship with these because of various reasons - Politics, Law, Core Values, etc. I haven't used Mint myself but I do use Ubuntu, there should be an application called "Additional Drivers" or similar under your system applications. You'll need to connect to the internet for it to find and install the drivers for your card, so use a cable connection if you can for the first bit. After your connected it'll hopefully list your wifi card and then you can just have it install. If you had it running before, then it should find it. Windows does about the same thing when you tell it to go ahead and look online for drivers, it also comes bundled with a lot of drivers that aren't available for Linux to do so in all cases. That would explain why it works in win7 right off the bat. Hope that helps.
