  First, make sure you got at least skills or at least a heavy passion to learn. Self study is the best way to get pratical knowledge when you don't have a networking job. Linux is free, and is a plus if you have knowledge of it. Cisco routers can be purchased extremely cheap off ebay. Second, get a certification. This will get you an interview, Where you can discuss and maybe will have to demonstrate your real world knowledge. Now, I happen to get certified while I was working on my degree, and this was a bonus b/c mostly all top jobs require a 4 year degree. Although I am still working on my degree, and I work in the IT field, I can most certainly say that the certification and self study help close the gap between me and someone w/ just a 4 year degree. This is for a number of reasons. Mainly due to the fact that degree's and certification's alike really don't dive into practical knowledge. Best practices, and theory yes, but more often than not you have to divise something that wasn't covered in your last course. Degree's are the worst, they have more theory than anything else. Certifications are next, they are more hands on than their degree counterpart, but even then don't rely on that alone. Self study, get your hands dirty, break something horribly just to fix it, and get the knowledge along with the qualifications.
