Is it safe to rely on network connection icons at the notification area?

My network connection speed is low and...?

  • i use windows xp. on network connections there are two icons, one says local area connection and the other 1394 connection. The later says 400Mbps and the local area one only 100mbps but it's the only one that seems to be active, and by the way my connection is very slow. How can I change to the other one that shows 400mbps? thank you!!!

  • Answer:

Local Area connection (LAN) is the one u shud use to connect to the internet. That 100Mbps is actually the full speed of the network card. This is never reached by current NZ connection through the telephone lines, which can only go at a max speed of bout 7Mbps. so the reason for your connection been slow is most likely to do with your isp do a speed test at http://www.speedtest.net/ and compare it with the speed that you signed up with you ISP.

The 1394 connection is a 'firewire' connection, and is only used with specific devices. Your PC or Laptop obviously has an available firewire port. This port is similar to a USB port, but is about half the size. Wired networks can be 3 speeds, this is 1gb, 100 mb or 10 mb, which is designated as a network card being 10/100/1000. For the 1000 to work correctly, both items on the network have to be capable of transmitting and receiving at that speed.

IEEE 1394 is Firewire. I doubt you're connecting to your router via Firewire. Also, you're mistaking the speed of the card for the speed of your connection. Nobody has a 400Mbps connection. Some people in Japan and South Korea may have theoretical 1Gbps lines, but ISPs don't divide bandwidth in such uneven amounts as 400Mbps. Also note that even if you have a theoretical bandwidth allocation of 1Gbps to your home, it would be impossible to utilise that much bandwidth without running some kind of server 24/7. Even then, you would soon realise that, although you are paying for Gigabit access, you don't actually have a Gigabit available to you every second of every day. It's far, far less. At times, less than 100Mbps. 400Mbps is the speed of your IEEE 1394 interface. 100Mbps is the speed of your Ethernet interface. Your connection speed, however, is limited by the speed of your Internet link. There's nothing that you can do to change this short of switching ISPs.

Windows lies! Your connection shows 100mb because the devices are capable of 100mb. That doesn't mean you're getting all that speed. Here's a link to freeware. http://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/network/fwnetmoni.html Try NetWorx. It'll tell you how fast your connection really is. But remember, the network isn't the only thing that can slow you down. Realtime virus detection can also slow it, along with many other factors.
