How come this happens with my internet?

Why does my internet keep disconnecting?!?

  • i have a linksys wireless-G broadband router and sbc as my internet provider. for the past few months the internet will just stop working throughout the house. this happens a few times a day. it is very annoying since i IM a lot and hate when my conversations get cut off. the internet router goes to my desktop that i have set up with wireless, the desktop it is currently connected to and out laptop. the internet just stops working for 5 mins then will come back then will die again a while late. do you know why this happens? its not the signal strength at all. do i need a new router? i heard from my friend that hers did something like this and they just bought a new one. is this the reason? could the router have a virus of some sort? any help is great :) thanks

Same thing happened to me. I got frustrated and bought a new router/modem. Worked perfectly.

Try updating the firmware. If that doesn't help, this is probably an indication that your router is about to die. What you're describing is exactly what happens when your router has been through a data surge.

Does it happen to all the computers in the house or just yours. This is important to find out if its just yours or if it might be a problem with your provider. Best thing to do is take the router out and plug your computer directly to your modem, to see if the router was really the problem or not.

Hi There, Most likely problem that causes that is either loose cables or even more likely is "noise" on the telephone line. If you have friends on the same ISP ask them if they are also having problems. If they are having problems call your ISP and have them also call the ISP. You also may have a phone plugged in that does not have the "filter" plugged in properly (or even a bad filter). All the above is assuming you have a DSL modem (telephone line input) Hope this helps, Al

go to linksys site find the model of your router and look for firmware update, this resolved my problem.also, you can try resetting your cable box by unplugging and plugging back in.
