How to print with an ethernet cable?

Will a phone dsl router work in conjunction with cable dsl modem?

  • I just got cable dsl internet. I used to have at&t phone dsl. I have the Netopia router from them which connects up to 4 pcs and I had it set up to my desktop as the server so I could connect to it from my laptop, even upstairs, and print or search hard drives etc. I was told you can't "piggyback" the two as they aren't compatible. But a Radio Shack guy told me if i already had a router I just needed to run the ethernet cable coming out of the cable modem into the router and from the router into the back of the desktop. When I did, I opened firefox and everything kept flashing (the address bar, etc.) I tried to type in the google search box on the toolbar and it didn't appear that I could either type or erase anything. I omitted the netopia router from the link and all is well. So what type of router must I have and how can I set it up with only one ethernet jack on back of a pc? They'd have to be linked somehow. Help!
