How to set up wireless internet in dorm room?
-
Hi, I brought a wireless modem from home that I am trying to set up. It is a Belkin model. At home, I plug it into our high-speed internet modem, and it allows me to use the internet wirelessly from my laptop. But here, we don't have a modem, we just have a sort of box that allows internet cables to be plugged in. I don't have the instructions; how can I set this up (if I can)?? I need to know where to plug the cords in... At home, this was how it worked: Power cord goes from Belkin into outlet Yellow internet cord goes from Belkin into DSL modem Other internet cord goes from Belkin into PC computer. Where should I put these cords in order to get them to work in my dorm room...? Thanks.

Answer:
what you're talking about should be set up like this: 1. whatever output cord would normally go into your computer from your internet provider needs to go into your router's internet input 2. Another Ethernet cable should go from the router( a computer output) into your computer. That way, you can use both the hardwired and wireless connections.

Are you sure you don't have wireless in your room already? Contact your ITS office on campus, however you might not be able to do wireless from your dorm room, since that box is connected by CAT 5 cable- which is like your yellow cable. CAT 5 is network cable- not modem cable, since it is running directly to the mainframe on campus.
Okay, first off, your question is kind of confusing, you say you brought a wireless modem from home, but then talk about plugging the Belkin into your modem at home? You don't wire two modems together, it makes no sense and serves no purpose. It sounds to me like what is in your room already and what you brought from home are both routers, which allow multiple computers to use the same connection, but you still need a modem in the first place. However, I am going to proceed as if the box you brought from is home is indeed a modem. Power cord to outlet, yellow cord goes from Belkin to "sort of box", after that, hopefully, everything should work.
I recommend Linksys. As far as setting it up, they make it very simple. It will come with a CD with a program called Easy Link Advisor. When you run the program, it will detect your router, internet connection, and it will take you through all the steps to configure a secure network, set up passwords, etc. There will be zero to very little manual configuration. Good luck!
