How do I set up printer sharing, for my desktop and laptop?
-
I have Vista on both my desktop and laptop. The printer is wire connected to the desktop. They both run through the same router, obviously the desktop wired and the laptop wireless. I enabled printer and file sharing on both computers, and the printer is installed on both computers. It shows that the printer is sharing, but when I go to add it as a network printer it says that it cannot find it. I have already done all of the steps available on the microsoft website, and it is still not working, so please give me step by step instructions on what to do, as I have already looked at the suggested websites.

Answer:
make sure one is the main computer like your Desktop, make sure you named it like home_office, you go to control panel look under printer, highlight printer right click and check share printer. then follow the Microsoft website steps.

Hi Gabby First of all, delete the printer from the second computer. Reboot the compu. Now go into the add printer wizard, and indicate that you want to connect to a NETWORK printer and not a local one. It will give you a list and you should see that printer from the list and follow instructions online. It will work. The reason it doesn't work now is because you installed the same software for both. If you are good in computers, than, go to the printer properties on the second computer and choose 'Virtual printer'. But, the fastest way is like I explained on top. Just do printer sharing fromthe desktop and not from the laptop. The laptop has no printer and doesn't need to share anything.

If its an actual network printer then it should just be a case of plugging it in and following the instructions that came with it, if its a usb or serial printer then you'll need to leave the pc its attatched to on and set the printer as shared. Or you could go expensive and get something like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Edimax-PS-1206MFG-Wireless-server-Multifunctional/dp/B000PI5DO0/ref=pd_sbs_ce_2/203-1285819-7642348 Or even a router with ports for usb printers
