Running Ubuntu problems?

Wireless Firmware missing on Dell Inspiron 600m with Ubuntu 11.10 OS. What to do?

  • I have an old Dell Inspiron 600m laptop, which is running rather slowly these days. I have the new Ubuntu 11.10 OS on a USB Flash Drive. I have booted my new laptop off of the USB Drive and there have been no problems, everything runs smoothly. When I boot the 600m laptop from the USB, there is a wireless issue. Specifically, it says "Wireless Network. Device not ready (firmware missing)." I have heard much about these propriety drivers that I need to download, but I haven't found any new ones for 11.10 that will get it to work. Everything else works on the laptop while running Ubuntu 11.10. I can plug it in to a wired connection, and that works fine. (I'm actually on it right now). So, what do I need to download to get the wireless to work. Please post links or codes to enter into the Terminal to rectify this problem. I have tried the sudo lshw -C network command, and it says that the Wireless Network is "DISABLED". Any ideas? Thanks.

  • Answer:
