I a list of steps (in order) to implement a WAN (wide area network)?

    This is not a "simple" question as a WAN can be used for all sorts of inter-communications between locations. I gather from your description the company's computers are located at different physical locations and not in the same building or local area? If they are then you are looking to setup a LAN (local area network). If there is only one computer at each location and you want to connect them back to a central location you have different choices (and costs associated with the choices). Probably the least expensive would be to install an internet connection at each location then install VPN hardware (or a VPN software client) then link back to the central location with a VPN concentrator. If you just need to exchange information between machines this is not a bad way to go and probably will be the least expensive method. A second choice, especially if you have applications that need to run client/server mode, would be to contact your local telco carriers to find out what services they offer for WAN connectivity. Again - this will entail additional costs depending on the interconnectivity speeds you need. It would be best to come up to speed on the different types of WAN connectivity and determine what you current and future needs are before actually trying to implement a WAN. I'd first ask myself the following questions. 1) Am I simply looking to have all 10 computers on a WAN and have Internet on each of them? 2) Does my company work with high security related information (do you store other people's credit card #'s, SS#'s, Financial Information? 3) Do you plan to purchase new computers in the next year? My suggestion, based on your technical experience (not much) is to set up your business like a glorified home. 1) Find an ISP, for business speed internet 2) Purchase a Router (Wired or Wireless) 3) Purchase a Networking Switch/Hub (8 port) 4) Run ethernet from each desk to the switch/router 5) plug router into modem, configure. 6) plug switch/hub into one of the router's ports 7) Plug each computer into a port on either the router (you will have 3 left) or the hub (you will have 7 left) This will give you ports for all 10 computers. You could use some of them wirelessly if you buy a wireless router and if they have wireless cards. But wireless is less reliable and slower for data sharing inside of your network. That means when one employee shares a file with another, it goes slower if one of them is on wireless. If you purchase more computers in the future, buy another switch, plug it into the router or the other switch. After following these steps (with OR without the internet ISP/modem) you will have a LAN. You can get more complicated, but you might want to look for a private IT contractor to help with more technical issues depending on how much free time you have during your business day. Expect to have 1 computer issue minimum per week in an office with 10 computers.

Need more info as to the infrastructure involved. Since you said WAN and not LAN, please provide distances, possible communications between structures, project budget restrictions.
