Wireless internet adapter for Linux?

Linux Wireless issues.?

  • Basically a few weeks ago I decided to try Linux, in particular Ubuntu. I have it installed in my Windows 7 partition but now I am willing to take the full plunge and switch to it all the way. The only issue is I cannot connect to wireless internet. It states "device not ready". Wireless is turned on on my laptop, I am very near the source, have tried making a manual connection with the network setup. I tried the hardware tester and it found my ethernet and wireless hardware (Broadcom 802.11g Network Adapter). As stated before I am new to linux so I'm probably missing something easy.

Go into Ubuntu Synaptic, the package management program. You get to it from the top menu bar, right hand, go down to second item system or admin, find synaptic. Use your user password to access it. In the search box type in broadcom. A list should come up. Use the one for b43-Fwcutter and click the box to install, then click apply. This is the file that will extract the chip codes for Broadcom. Once done, reboot the computer. You would probably find using PCLinuxOS KDE a lot easier to use. PCLinuxOS Gnome isn't quite up to par yet. Ubuntu restricts what it is allowed to install and you have to install it yourself, like codecs for videos.
