How to increase GTA IV FPS?

How many fps would go up in gta iv if i upgraded my gpu from 8400gs to a 8600gt would it increase?

  • Specs: Intel pentium 4, 2.8 Ghz single core without ht 8400gs 1.5 gb ram I get around 7 to 9 fps So i was wondering that if i went from a 8400gs to a 7900gs would my fps go up and if yes by how many? Now i know my cpu is a potential bottleneck for gta iv with my system but no i will not upgrade my cpu until the next year when i get a complely new computer. For now if i upgraded my gpu would my fps go up and if yes then my how many? Thanks in advance

    That's kinda a vague question. If you went from a 8400 to a 7900 it may increase or even decrease. Perhaps you can tweak the settings down a bit. The human eye sees maximum 60 fps so anything over that is just for your e-peen. But 40-60 is not a big difference either. Whats your current fps? ALSO get some ram lol....1.5g is the issue imo. If you have 4 slots just throw some 1gs in. If you have xp you can support about 4g. Vista is more and 7 even more. Get some ram in my opinion not a new card. This is a cheap fix and will help a lot more imo.

above you say from a 8400GS to a 8600GT and then you say from a 8400GS to a 7900GS (which is a downgrade) 84 -8600 you'll probably not get much diffrence and is hardly worth the upgrade. you'd probably get the same frame rate with a 8600GT. get a 8800GT and the game would be playable, i got a 8800GTX and it's pretty good on medium/high settings.

Going to an 8600GT will help somewhat, but by today's standards the 8600GT is still well below average when playing modern games. The 9500GT would be the better option at that price point. But again you can only expect but so much. No matter what you do, the performance of GTA4 on your system will be poor. You might see another 5-7 fps going to a 8600GT or 9500GT. For GTA4 the 8800GT/9800GT/GTS 250 is considered the mid-range option. With the 9600GT/GSO being the lowest end card capable of running it acceptably.
