When you replace windows with ubuntu what does it do?

Does booting Ubuntu from a DVD replace Windows?

  • Hey everyone. I'm thinking of burning Ubuntu to a DVD to try out linux (Never tried linux before), and I'm wondering: I have a windows vista PC, and I'm assuming to boot Ubuntu, I press F12 at startup to boot from the DVD, yes? Well, will doing so permently replace windows, or will it just run unitl the computer shutdowns?

  • Answer:

You can try Ubuntu by putting the DVD or CD into the computer and boot it that way. You can choose to install it if you really like it. You can choose to permanently replace Windows if you want, but there are ways (partitioning the hard drive, for example) so that you can choose between Ubuntu and Windows every time you start your computer. BTW, you probably do press the F12 key at startup to boot from the DVD. This could be different for other computers though.

No it will not, when you boot from the dvd it will ask you if you want to try Ubuntu without doing any changes to your computer. You can take that dvd and use it on any computer and bypass log on screens. when you use the internet on the Ubuntu it will not keep track of the websites you go to and it wont remember your passwords so it is very useful to have a Ubuntu dvd.

ubuntu will not touch your hard disk unless you install it. Booting the live cd does not install.
