It may work, or the hard drive may be already dead. Since it is in the computer, another IDE/SATA will be useless. It is already hooked to one or the other. However the cable may be defective, try another cable of the same kind may actually work, after all. If you do not know which is which, take the cable to the store, probably Best Buy. Then you have to install the cable or return it if it is still dead. You may have to take a picture to help putting a another cable. Check the power cable, too. do you hear the HDD spinning? Also check the BIOS to see if the settings are correctly detected. My HDD enclosure had a RPM limit, which I ignored on a 10,000 RPM drive. It overheated in 10 minutes. USB may be too slow. If none of this works, either throw it away or use a data recovery service, very expensive. I once heard of people placing a HDD in a refrigerator/freezer to recover files in spurts from an overheating drive.
