What wire can I use to connect my PC to my TV?

How to connect old Hi-Fi speakers to PC?

  • I have come across some old Goodmans Maxim 2 speakers, from the 80s I believe, however there is little information about them on the internet. They have bare-wire terminals which I managed to fit into my sister's hi-fi easily, and they blew me away compared to my current horrendous speakers on my PC (Logitech LS11s) which are only a small step up from the cheap speakers you get with a computer. Therefore, I am determined to connect the Maxim 2's to the PC (the PC screen is my 37" Samsung TV, which I run HDMI to and use the sound inputs and outputs on the back of the TV) however, the TV has no means of connecting bare-wire speakers to it. That is ignoring the fact that I would need a stereo amplifier (I think...?) to drive such speakers. I have checked Maplins and Amazon however I can't seem to find a fairly inexpensive way to connect the Maxim 2's to the PC. I've been doing some googling and have come across some equipment such as Pre-amps, DACs, and T-amps, however I'm still unsure of exactly what I need to connect these old speakers to a PC. Please could anybody clarify exactly what I need and perhaps point me in the direction of some cheap equipment to do the job (i'm not fussed on high end equipment, as long as it works and doesn't distort the sound too much)] Thanks in advance!

  • Answer:

Logitech LS11 speakers have a resistance of 4 ohms. If your Goodman's Maxim have the same resistance you could wire/solder the bare wire terminals to similar jacks as LS11 and start using them. The resistance is usally mentioned on the specification plate on the back of the speaker, if not available try measuring it. However this will give you about 6W of output. If you want higher output, you will need an amplifier which can be connected to a PC.
