Will four sata I, 2mb cache hard drives in raid 0 get me decent performance?
-
I'm thinking of ordering four identical sata I hard drives(1.5gb/s, 40gb, 7200rpm, 2mb cache) and running them all together in raid 0. Would I get decent performance compared to, say, a single 7200rpm sata II(3gb/s) hdd with 16mb cache?

Answer:
You'll get better overall performance, but if one drive dies then you lose EVERYTHING if you're running all 4 drives in RAID0. At RAID0+1, you'll have near parity on performance (the RAID set is a little faster) but not enough to justify the cost. Honestly, you're better off to spend the money on a pair of larger hard drives and run them in RAID1 than you are with 4 drives running RAID0 or RAID0+1.
