How can I program and build a touch screen keyboard?

• I want to make a touch screen display like an iPad or related devices, but only use it as a keyboard for my PC. It would be connected via USB and would get electricity through it too. It should send the same impulses to my PC as a normal keyboard. The only use of it would be looking cool, but once I've made it I can figure out the rest on my own. I have enough programming experience to do it... I just don't know how to start...(It's the first time I'm doing hardware) Can you help me? Do I need to program an own OS? How much would it cost?   That isn't common knowledge and very few companies actually do it so why would one of them tell you their secret that keeps you coming back for more? Go to school for 6 or 7 years and you might know where to start! To start you in the right direction, you would need to contact the maker of whatever operating system that you want to use it under for specific details and any other stuff you need to know about publishing under that platform.
