Computer screen turning black?

My computer overheated a few days ago and now my screen keeps turning black.?

  • I overheated my computer a few days ago, and now whenever i run my computer for more than 5 minutes or so my monitor turns black as if it is off. I already know that the gfx card is not to blame, i took it out and the screen still kept turning black, if i leave the screen off for a minute or two, and then turn it back on, it will work again. It also works just fine if i have my room at low temperatures (anything below about 63 degrees Fahrenheit). So it seems to me that it has something to do with the temperature of the cpu, but i am not sure how to deal with this. Can anybody tell me what component of my system is damage and how to repair it? or should i just buy a new part?

You might be fixing to lose your graphics card....or it may be just a problem of a bad driver or even possibly an overheating problem or a power supply going bad! 1) What were you doing during the time that it went blank?....playing an intensive game or video editting applications will cause the video card to overheat... a) if it is a desktop open a side panel and check to see if any of the fans are blocked by dust or cables from allowing a free flow of air. if so shut down the computer and Clean them out with a can of compressed air or a brush ( do not vacumn) Sometimes just opening the sidepanel will allow enough cool air to resolve the problem. b) if a laptop...support it above the work surface to allow better air circulation or remove it from a docking station if you use one. c) for either laptop or desktop... start > rclk 'my computer > properties > hardware tab > device manager and under video adapters look for what type it is (Nvidia or Intel or ATI) and the model number/description.... go to the manufacturer's website and under downloads/drivers for that model ...download the driver to the desktop. Navigate back to device manager >video adapter and double click to bring up properties...select driver tab > select to uninstall/remove. Restart the computer(your video might be out of oversized (don't do anything)...find the driver file you downloaded to the desktop and double click it and it will re-install the latest driver files for the video card. If non of those work for it then try substituting the graphics card. If it still acts up then you probably have a bad power supply...if not then the graphics was going bad.
