Backup windows 7 files and file locations?
-
Hi, I'm trying to backup all of my computer files (pictures, documents, downloaded files, etc.). Is there an easy way to do this by not having to look for and drag every file and wonder whether or not I missed or forgot one? Is there a way to do this where all files will return to their original locations (ex - all desktop icons and files will be put back on the desktop)? If I drag the "user" folder in my "C" drive, will this do both jobs? Is this better or wose than using the Windows 7 backup feature? Thanks.

Answer:
You need a professional utility that can be setup one time to monitor your folders, back them up and easily restore them back to any day/time you wish. Try Acronis True Image Home http://www.acronis.com There is no standard way to do this in windows. Especially since windows has much of the information you are wanting to back up even Hidden! Also, Windows itself has no real backup solution built-in that is reliable. As far as files being all over the place, better "filing techniques" can fix that real quick. In other words, before saving anything, plan on where it should go, first. Remember, a disk is nothing more than an electronic filing cabinet and it has a filing system where certain things go in certain places. This process can surely make your life easy or a nightmare depending on your personal habits on a computer.

Use windows 7's backup - it will allow you to select files, or you can back up the whole computer (Which isn't a bad idea). You can also create a system repair disk if you wish to be able to restore your computer to how it was when the system disk and system backups were created. Very handy if the hard drive fails. Copying (not dragging) your user folder (not the next level up which is users) will back up all data you have saved to your profile.
