What is Cyclic Redundancy Check and can I still download?

My external hard drive won't work. Cyclic redundancy check error!?

  • Out of no where, I'm not longer able to open any files from my external hard drive. It shows up as a drive, and I see my folders, but when I try to open any of them, I get a message telling me I have to format the drive before I can use it. It then gives me a message saying my folders are not accessible, and says "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)" I cannot run a scan on the drive, or defragment it. When I try to copy and paste any of the info on this drive, it tells me that it can't read from the source or disk. I have over 700 gigs of information and files on this drive, and I DO NOT want to lose it all. PLEASE HELP!!!

  • Answer:

Use a data recovery program on that hard drive. You must have another hard drive on the recovery PC that is large enough to save recovered files to. Good luck. Data Recovery Wizard Free Edition (limited to 1GB recovery) http://www.easeus.com/datarecoverywizard/free-data-recovery-software.htm or Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery (not free)
