How do I install Windows XP on a new hard drive?

I am going to Install a new Hard Drive on my cpu. Do I need to install windows xp on my new hard drive first?

  • My hard hard drive has errors on it I want the information on it just not the errors with windows can somebody suggest how to go about this. If I ghost my old Hard drive does that bring the old windows to?

    Open a command prompt and type "chkdsk C: /f" (without the quotation marks) and it should fix the errors on your hard drive for now. It is good to back up your data and Ghost is a good program to create an image of the entire drive, but if you do that you will also backup all the errors and garbage on your old drive and put on your new one. This is an opportunity to start fresh with a new hard drive and a new installation of XP. Your computer will run faster and be in pristine shape. You will have to reinstall any programs you have and any Windows updates you need after XP is installed, but that is the price of success. After you install XP, THEN install your old drive as a slave to the new one. Copy all your personal files from the old drive to the new one. Now that you have your system set up like you want it, reformat your old drive. Now backup your new installation to the old drive. If you need it, you now have a backup of your new system. This assumes your old drive is worth saving after running chkdsk in step 1. Good luck.

yes, it does bring over the old Windows. Just install the new hard drive and install Windows on it, then put in the old drive as slave and copy your data.

if you are replacing your old harddrive with your new one, then yes. if you are just adding the new harddrive to your cpu, then no - you will be using the windows xp that already exist in your pc. if you backup the whole c drive, you still need to reformat and reinstall windows in your new harddrive, before you can use to restore the backup you made.
