How to search in rails from two models?

What exactly does it mean to rig 3D models?

  • I've taken an interest in 3D modeling recently, so I downloaded Blender. I've never tried 3D modeling before, so I'm completely new to everything about it. Right now, I'd like to make two models to use for Team Fortress 2, one to be used by the Sniper and one to be used by the Soldier (both for a server mod that's run by my favorite group). Just about every time I search something about custom models for Team Fortress 2, I find something that mentions rigging. What is that?

  • Answer:

Rigging is putting bones into a 3D model to make it movable. Without the rig, it would just be a T-Pose model, and you can't move its arms and legs. In the Source engine, it's pretty important for the ragdolls and the animations.

Rigging is making a 3D model so that you can move it (such as move its arms, make it walk, etc). To rig a model, you make a skeleton for it (basically like a real skeleton), then you tell the computer which parts of the model to move when you move each bone. In Blender, a skeleton is called an armature, and the process of telling the computer what parts to move when you move each bone may be done by weight painting, or by manually making vertex groups that have the same name as their respective bones. For more information, I recommend the Blender wiki (wiki.blender.org) -- it even has a very detailed step by step tutorial on making a basic character, from modeling the character to rigging and animating it.
