Very poor audio quality with headset. Any suggestions?

I have a double hookup headset, one hookup for mic, one for the audio. However, when I put in the audio one. The audio quality itself echoes and creates static. HOWEVER, when I put in the audio jack halfway, everything is perfect, but if I shove it in all the way. Everything is messed up. Help please.
