Why are my steam games so slow?

What's making my online games on Steam slow?

When I play solo (L4D2 i play fine on single player and I play TF2 on solo practice well.) but when I tried to play online it took me a long time to connect a server, even at ping rate of 80. Almost everytime I succeed connecting (Other times i was timed out) I was lagging so bad that everything around me went by so fast, literally. Before I was able to connect servers like nothing but now it's slow. :( I was thinking that my anti-virus program must be the one that's making my connections slow. What do you guys think?

either change or upgrade your internet. my wired connection is about 1 gbps and wireless about 60- 70 mbps
