What host can i hook a usb external hard drive to?

I need to hook-up multiple USB port host's to an external USB drive.?

  • This is the situation. I have a set-top-box that use USB to record media content onto an external hard drive. So this is the host. I wish to have another STB hooked up to this same external drive. And I wish to also have a PC able to access this external drive. 3 host's sharing the same external hard drive. Is there a product on the market that can do this?

  • Answer:

NAS. Shared drive on a PC. Not something you could set up without modifying the firmware of the stb.

There is nothing to share one USB drive to more than one-way connection, as all the devices would conflict and corrupt the data.

If you want to share a drive between several computers, the normal solution is network attached storage (NAS). You can get an enclosure that will take an external drive you already own, or you can get one with drives built in. If the Set Top Box uses a USB connection to its drive, you won't be able to share it - a drive can only have one master. I'm not sure that the device you describe (a disk controller with multiple USB interfaces) exists. If it does, it's not likely to be all that cheap. And you could run into problems with the two STBs trying to write their indexes and config data to the same place on the disk - they are unlikely to be designed to share a disk. Why do you want two set top boxes to share a drive? Is it just to save money on disks? Or is there another requirement that I'm not getting? Some hard disk recorders will share their drive or stream their contents via a network or wireless connection - that may be your best bet for getting the content to your PC. For maximum flexibility, some form of quiet media centre PC (windows or otherwise) with multiple tuners / satellite interfaces might also do what you want. Or look at something like the Archos TV+, or for a different approach, the Neuros OSD http://www.neurostechnology.com/ Might be worth considering whether you need digital or Hi Def compatibility, depending on how long you want your solution to last, and what your country's TV standards are like. The bad news is you're going to have to buy more than just an external drive.

yes, go to ecost.com I saw something like that on there.. and there electronics are cheap!
