Should I buy a USB portable/external CD-Rom drive for my pc.?
-
I bought a game at eBay last time. I got pissed since it didn't work. My CD Rom drive cant read the game that i bought. It can read any kind of DVD very well but not an audio CD or a CD Rom. I have a LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-160P6S PGS1. I searched ways to fix my problems. And it all came down to this. The only way left is to either buy the usb portable/external CD-Rom drive or buy a new CD-drive. Unfortunately im not an expert in the computer so the best way is to buy the usb thinygy. Dont you think its kinda like the best thing? PS: I really want to buy this im just makin sure if theres any way left to fix my problem without buying a new cd-rom drive or dowloading updates for my current drive(no updates were found).

If you can use a screwdriver, have fairly decent vision, your hands don't shake too badly and you don't try to do it in 5 seconds, you can replace the internal drive. (I'm 66 and I do it without thinking about it - except for dropping the little screws once in a while). There are 2 cables on the drive (and maybe a third one to feed audio from audio CDs to your sound card) on the drive - one that's about 2" wide and as thick as a wire. the other consists of 4 wires in a plastic connector. The wide one: there's a "nub" on one face of the connector that has the wires. There's a slot on the connector in the drive. The nub side goes into the slot side. The small one. Two corners are rounded, two are square. Line it up properly. (If you have an audio cable, it;s a small 4-pin cable. When you unplug it you'll see how to tell which way it goes. Either the connector can only go in one way [digital] or the wires are different colors [analog].) The drive is held in by 4 screws (unless they got sloppy and left a few out.) Remove the screws and slide the drive out. Remove the cables. Put the cables on the new drive. Slide it in. Put the screws back. Close the computer. You're done. See? It takes longer to describe everything than it takes to replace the drive.

Your problem maybe in software, Lite-On it is one of the good brands, any DVD-RW can read any cd,dvd plus write then, go to the lite-on site and download the update called firmware, that it is the internal update(bios) or you burner, then this devices they have a program to do their work, like copy, burning, media player, etc and some times they can conflict with other ones you have in your system like media player from Windows, try to insert a CD and your liteon, then open mycompter, then the DVD drive, right click it, then see if you have the option of autoplay, if do not open, then it will come a page that will tell you wicht program you want to open, select any player you have, and this time i will suggest Win media player until you get somehting better.
