Hypothetical question about motherboard and CPU?

Hardware question: I am looking to install a better CPU without changing my motherboard....?

  • I have a Pentium 4 cpu with a DDR2 motherboard. Is it possible to install a better cpu on a DDR2 motherboard without changing the motherboard? I already know that the "i" series chips should only be installed on DDR3 motherboards.

  • Answer:

Hi, I assume that you are planning of replacing your Pentium 4 with the latest i7 processor. Unfortunately the i7 processor fits in only the specific socket design for it, which is socket LGA 1156. The socket on your old motherboard is Socket 423, and which is totally incompatible. So, you have no choice to upgrade your motherboard together with your rams if you are attempt to upgrade your processor.
