Best Graphics Card For A Dell XPS 410?

Computer assistance, Broken Dell XPS 710, graphics card?

  • My boyfriend has a Dell XPS 710. It does not currently work. When you turn it on, amber light on tower stays on, fans go really fast, no display. Replaced motherboard, nothing, replaced power supply, nothing, replaced processor, nothing. Next up is graphics card. I know Dell uses proprietary motherboards & power supplies, but can I stick any graphics card in, within reason? Part is nVidia GeForce 8600GTS 256MB PCI-e Video Card, Dell part # tp073

  • Answer:

I would add a graphics card in. Any graphics card that fits in the computer and fits your requirements is ok.

It does sound like bad RAM or RAM slots to me. Try a different stick of RAM to see if that makes a difference. It also could be possible that you got a second bad power supply (that happens). Also, go over all the connections in your computer to make sure everything is connected properly. That includes the PCI-e power connector to the GeForce 8600 GTS (I have one of these cards and it has a 6-pin power connector on it), the P4 power connector (2 yellow+2 black in a square configuration) is connected correctly, and the 24-pin ATX power connector is connected correctly (I do believe Dell is using industry standard power supplies now, at least they were with my little sister's Dimension 4600).

been there done that got shirt

Have you tried the RAM, faulty RAM will cause similar problems. You should be able to replace the Video Card.
