Well there a various types of printers. Ink Jets are the most common, followed by laser printers. There are also impact printers, and thermal printers.

Pretty much every common PC printer is inkjet based unless they say differently. The only other semi-common printer for home use is a laser printer, though other types do exist. You can buy T-Shirt transfer paper at office supply stores (Staples) or sometime general department stores (Walmart). If you're doing anything with color, stick with white shirts unless you want to do a lot of experimentation. There's a separate type of transfer material for dark fabric. It's more like an iron-on label than a transfer.
