How to print with an ethernet cable?

Can a USB printer print through a router?

  • Hello Guys! I have an HP Deskjet D2430 printer that is attached through my network using my computer as a print server. I saw a USB to ETHERNET adapter in a local computer store. Will it work if I attach the adapter to my printer then attach an ethernet cable to my router?

  • Answer:

Never tried it but, Yes. If the printer has no network port and the USB adapter works as advertised you should be good to go. Good Luck

Negatory. That adapter works for computers, but your printer was not manufactured with networking in mind. You'd have no way to set it's IP address. There IS an adapter that will accomplish what you're trying to do. It's called a JetDirect. Here's an example (this one is for wireless, not wired networking): http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&q=usb+jetdirect&cid=5690989627214890520&sa=title#p

No. You need a PRINT SERVER to do that. That peripheral you found is for computers, which has drivers and such to talk to the network. Printer is not THAT smart.

All the D2430 does is receive printout information over the USB cable from your computer. The computer is what does all the networking, formats the printout, etc. If you were to attach the printer by the USB directly to a network jack, it would not work. The information transmitted over a network is not the same as what the computer would sent. That is why you have to use your computer as the print server.
