Trying to find a smaller printer.

I am trying to find the IP adress of a printer so I can set up the printer.?

  • And there is no internet where we are trying to find it because it is for a computer class and there is no internet where we work. So how do I find the IP adress so I can set up the printer? There are no printers set up yet.

  • Answer:

a network printer with built-in ethernet port usually provides a menu button that will allow you to display IP address assigned to it. You may also try printing self test or configuration page from your printer..... ooooor mmm... If your networked printer uses DHCP, you may connect to your router and find the IP address of the printer from DHCP status page. The router displays all host machines that are assigned dynamic IP addresses......

I'm not sure if I'm reading the question correctly. If this is a networked printer via LAN cable, and it's something like a HP Laser printer, they frequently have Network Setup on their small displays where you can read or set the IP address. If this is a wireless networked printer, the only way to get the IP address unassisted would be to connect it to your computer (usually by USB if it supports it) and see if you can set the IP. Otherwise, you might have to find a sysadmin.

Every network printer or print server has a unique IP address associated with it. This address is either configured manually or set using an automatic network protocol such as the boot protocol, reverse address resolution protocol or zeroconf. You can normally find the IP address of a printer on the printer’s control panel or by printing the configuration page. Select the printers and faxes tab from the control panel. Right click on the printer those you want to find the IP address and click properties. Then click on the ports tab to display the IP address of your printer.

There is no guarantee that the printer would even be in the same IP range as your network, so the best plan would be to find the manual and read up what the default IP setting is. If there isn't, maybe you should try connect it directly to a pc via USB cable (or parallel, if it's old) and configure it before plugging it direct on the network. If you have the default IP, set another computer to the same range and then log in to configure it. Example, if the printer has default IP 10.0.0.5, set one of the computers to 10.0.0.6 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0. Then change the printer to your network's range, change the computer you worked on back too, and you should be sorted.
