How to set up a fax/print/scan server?
-
We just got a router installed at the office we own, and after looking at the situation, and asking how a network printer works I have some more questions. Would it be possible to connect a computer to the router, set very limited permissions on the computer, but in the background have a fax service, a printer service, and a scanning service running? For instance, a person could sit at their computer (connected to the same router/network), and print something, then it would be routed to this server computer, which would act as a print server and send it to the printer/scanner/faxer which would be attached to the computer? Also, if someone used faxing software on their computer, they could fax something from their computer, it would be routed to this computer, which would fax it? The reason I ask is because I would like to set it up so that when someone receives a fax, it just gets emailed to an email based on what number it is faxed to (would we have to run some more phone lines for this, or is there another way possible over TCP/IP)? In addition, it would be nice to be able to scan something into the computer, and have the user enter who they are in some way in the computer and have it email it to that person (I'm guessing some sort of modified SMTP server that would be able to convert these scans and faxes)? It would be nice if all of this could be run through the internet connection, but if we need to spare a phone line for the faxing, we have one available.

This may not be as complete a answer as you wanted but I thought I would tell you what I am doing for a print server. I have three computers 1 HP laptop (Vista 64 bit) 1 Dell laptop (Win2k) and 1 Dell Desktop (Win2k). Using the following as instrunctions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbmCef5LVUc and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0exwPPRgLko. My printer is connected to the Dell laptop. I can get the Dell desktop to print thru the Dell laptop fine but I am having problems with the Vista laptop. So far no luck. My issue is that HP does not have a specific Officejet v40 driver for Vista. Some how Vista has a work around for my printer: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00808543&lc=en&cc=us ----- When I try to connect to the printer it wants me to load the Vista driver which I can not find. If anyone out there has any idea I would appreciate a reply.
