How to use my Monitor as a TV screen?

Can I use a monitor as my secondary computer screen and a TV for a console?

  • I have a MacBook Pro and a Wii. What I want to be able to do is use a single screen as both a secondary monitor for my MacBook, as well as a screen on which to use my Wii, being able to switch between inputs. So, for instance, I'm working on my MacBook doing some graphic design work using 2 screens, and I feel like taking a break. So I power on my Wii and press a button on the secondary monitor to switch to the AV input, so instead of serving as my second desktop, the screen now serves as the video display for the Wii. Is something like this possible? Side note: Preferably, the second screen's primary use would be as a desktop, because doing graphic design work, I need a common screen resolution to set as. I don't want to work with graphics using a distorted screen resolution on a monitor with an odd native resolution.

  • Answer:

If you have the component cables for your Wii (R/G/B, plus Red and White for audio) you could use this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815158131&cm_re=component_to_vga-_-15-158-131-_-Product It will convert the component output from your Wii to a normal VGA signal. If your monitor has both DVI and VGA inputs, you could then connect your Wii to the VGA, and your laptop to the DVI input. Your monitor should have a button (or a setting in its on screen menu) to switch between the two. If you have two VGA sources, you could also add a simple 2 port VGA switch.
