What are the HDTV standards?

Why does my hdtv pc setup always cause my hdtv to revert back to 1360 (1280 native) x 768 it is annoying?

• the initial setup for hooking external displays to hdtv' are to set it to 1360 x 768. it is actually 1280, but it stretches the image twice on the hdtv. i currently have my laptop hooked up to my hdtv at 1920 x 1080, but it randomly reverts back to 1360 x 768 about once a week. my laptops max resolution is 1280 x 800 my hdtv displays stuff at 1920 x 1080 heres what i do as a temporary fix, 1. switched off the hdtv display and main laptop display full resolution 2. unplugged the vga cable. 3. plugged it back in. now when i plug it back in, there are more resolution options for the hdtv display in graphics properties, but sometimes, the resolution is messed up even more and it gets to a point where the main laptop display screen is displaying at 640 x 480 or 800 x 600, and it requires more random unnecessary fiddling with the settings and plugging and unplugging in the vga cable. all i want is the hdtv to display at full resolution when turning on the laptop
