How do I run a game on both of my monitors?

Two Grahics Cards on Two Monitors?

  • I recently purchased a new computer with two Nvidia EVGA GeForce 9400 GT 512MB 16X PCI Express graphics cards. I also purchased two 19" LCD monitors from e-machines. Currently I have both of these monitors plugged into the DVI ports on the top card only because it works that way. I have read that SLI cannot run two monitors, and whenever I enable SLI and try to play a game, my computer freezes. So I was wondering if there was a way to run each monitor off of each graphics card, or is my second card just wasted?

  • Answer:

The latest version of the nvidia drivers actually support SLI on a multi monitor system, but only if you are using Vista (read the second bullet on this page: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x86_180.48_whql.html) I suggest that you get the the latest driver for your video card and make sure the the SLI bridge is installed on your cards - it's a cable attached to the top part of both video cards. As a side note, you would have probably been better off getting one 9800GT instead of two 9400GTs. It has better gaming performance for less money and does not rely on SLI. By the way, are you sure that your motherboard supports SLI? Not all motherboards with two PCI express x16 support SLI. Edit: it sounds like the problem manifests itself after a prolonged use of the video cards. There are two reasons I can think of that can lead to this. 1. Over-heating 2. Power supply issues To address the overheating you may want to try to open one of the case panels and see if it makes a difference. You should also get a thermal monitoring software and check the temps of your video cards and CPU. Power issues - try to contact the PC manufacturer and find out if your PC has a power supply that is powerful enough to handle your system. OEM PC manufacturers are notorious for using power supplies with very low power ratings. Without knowing what CPU you have it's hard to tell for sure, but my guess would be that you probably have a mid-grade dual core CPU, so you need at least a 350W power supply.

SLI cannot be used for 2 monitor at once. what it does is support higher video quality at a high fps(frames per second) rate. what you can do is clone your monitors and it will give you both desktop video quality pictures but you will have to disable SLI. or you can do an extended view as in, using 2 monitor and making them widescreen.
