Low resolution on my computer/tv screen?

Screen resolution on ibuntu too low...?

  • I am a brand new ibuntu user. I have a nvidia video card. I have downloaded and used the recommended driver for nvidia. When I go to the screen resolution page, I only have a choice of 640 x 480. I'm used to 1024 x 768 and I can't seem to get it back to that resolution. I'm ready to give up on ibuntu but I really don't want to do it yet. Please help!

  • Answer:

You would get much better help at http://ubuntuforums.org/ since it may depend what ibuntu version you have and specific video card/chip. I am familiar with Ubuntu, but not the nVidia proprietary video drivers, or the ibuntu variation. This may help for temporarily trying other modes. It may not explain how go use cvt or gtf to find modelines, but "cvt 1024 768" would find a 60 Hz modeline or "gtf 1024 768 60" would do similar (but gtf can also find it for other frequencies besides 60 Hz). https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution
