"No Signal" with DVI to VGA adapter.

DVI to VGA adapter doesn't work, wtf?

  • So I bought a DVI to VGA adapter to make my VGA-only LCD monitor work with my DVI-I only port on a Dell optiplex computer. What happens is, I see the BIOS and Windows loading comes up and then when it changes resolution to go to the logon screen the monitor loses signal and light goes amber. I tried VGA mode and it works with VGA mode. Within VGA mode, I try to up the res to 800x600 but same crap happens and it won't revert the 640x480. It's really odd. Other than trying another adapter, is there any technical reason why this isn't working like it should? What is the difference of a DVI-I to VGA adapter and a DVI-A to VGA adapter? The adapter has a male dual link DVI-I connector while on the other side is a female VGA port. My computer has a dual link DVI-I port which technically should transmit analog as well as digital signal. (unlike DVI-D and DVI-A)

  • Answer:

Try plugging the adapter/cord in the other dvi port on your computer.
