Why is my PC monitor so dark?

  • When I logged earlier, for some reason my PC's screen was extremely dark and I couldn't read anything. Then I changed the settings a bit, I turned up the brightness and colors, I can see a little better but it's still dark. When I hit the auto adjust button (I'm using an acer), It goes perfect like how it normally is, but then only for half a second and then returns to it's dark self. Is there any way to remedy this? Serious answers only please. Thank you. BTW ive been adjusting the different settings for the last five minutes, it doesnt change much. everything's at its highest but no luck. ive also tried the contrast, nothing... my LCD doesnt have any gamma adjustments or degauss... Other sources say it could be a backlight problem, but i highly doubt that. All the cables and such seem to be in order.

  • Answer:

Could be one of the following: -LCD backlight is failing - replacement monitor -Graphics card isnt outputting the correct voltage (try a spare graphics card) -faulty cables, wiggle the cables at each end or replace if one available.

Sorry, but it does sound like the backlights, or the inverter board that powers them. If you can, try it on another PC or as a secondary display off a friends laptop to eliminate the graphics card in your PC. Check the warranty on the screen - some have 3 years. Can also try it disconnected from the PC, unplug the data cable and see if the on screen menu's etc are ok or dull.
