Every time I try to play the Sims 3 on my computer it will pop up Driver Display quit working unexpectedly.?
-
I bought the Sims 3 and installed it on my computer. I freed up enough space for it to finally download. Now that I finally (after a whole day) can play it, it will only run for a maximum of 5 minutes at a time. Then, the whole screen on my computer will go black and a box will pop up saying the Driver Display has unexpectedly quit working and that I have to reboot my system. So, I have rebooted my system over 10 times now, and every time it goes black and pops up with the error. Also my whole computer screen will be 10x bigger. As if I have set the settings to make everything larger. I do not understand why it is doing this? Can somebody please help me? My computer is a laptop... Microsoft Windows XP. It is an old refurbished computer. Could this be why?

Answer:
The problem is a compatibility problem between your graphics card and the game. Your graphics card may not have the ability to run that game. I would suggest upgrading your graphics card (or switching it, if it is, say an Nvidia, to a Radeon. Also, you could try turning down the graphics to reduce the amount the game is exerting on your GPU.

Sims 3 requires a DirectX 9 capable video card (they call it Pixel Shader 2 in the requirements, which covers all three versions of DX9), and integrated graphics don't work all that well if they do support DX9 graphics. Edit your question with what graphics chip your laptop has and I'll let you know if it's a no go or not; right-click the desktop, select properties, click on the resolution tab. It should say something like "Default Monitor on Intel GMA950" or something similar.
