Why do my icons keep disappearing on my desktop?

Why do my desktop icons keep scattering all over?

  • I came upon my computer screen to find all of my desktop icons were all scattered about and not inthere usual places. So I painstakingly spent 1/2 hour sorting through and rearranging my desktop icons. Then I hit something that was not out of the ordinary (can't remember what) , and I looked up and they were all scrambled again! Also my tool bar thing...the one that holds the icons at the bottom of my screen would suddenly be redirected to show at the side edge instead. I finally figure out that I could just drag it back over, but why is my puter automatically rearranging everything like that?

You can try this: (Don't know if it will help.) Make sure your desktop is not set to "Automatically Arrange Icons". Move everything where you want it. Shut down. Start your computer again. Hopefully the icons will stay in place.

It's another thing that XP kept in order but Vista screws up. Best solution I could find is this http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/save-and-restore-desktop-icon-layout-in-windows-vista/ (You can restore them all with one click or two)
