Why does my TV buzz when text appears on the screen?

Why is my laptop monitor changing colors and missing lines?

  • I used to plug my laptop into an older sony tv via HDMI and never had a problem. I recently upgraded to a flat screen 1080p sony bravia which I have been connecting to via HDMI as well. It wasn't a sudden change but after a month or so my monitor started by looking blurry or "pixelated". After closer inspection it appears as though there are vertical lines with missing color making smaller text hard to read. The first time this happened I restarted and the problem went away. It has progressively gotten worse and more frequent. A couple days ago I noticed the lines as well as a reddish tint upon startup. When I took a screenshot of this and sent it to my phone the picture appeared fine. When I connect it to my tv the picture is fine as well. Today I started up and no red tint but now it's a green tint. Is blue next? What could be the problem? Help!

Look at the connector, make sure that none of the pins are bent. Move the connector around while looking at the screen. If it gets better and worse, it is the cable, and can be replaced for the cost of the cable, if your monitor supports it. If not, monitors are amazingly cheap nowadays. Either buy a new one or if that isn't feasible, try to pick one up used. Can probably get a used monitor for under $30, if you can track down someone selling them.
