What causes the screen of a CRT monitor to deteriate?

  • First off, my apologies to anyone that saw and answered my previous question concerning a monitor with a hole burned through it. I was given the wrong one to look at. I've just started as a temp IT at a company and they have had issues with CRT monitors located in one specific place and do not know what is causing it. The screen looks as is the inside is slowly deteriorating and falling off. As it does this, the monitor seems to gain more and more static to it until finally it starts getting enough voltage to really hurt someone. It also becomes more and more "cloudy" looking until you finally can't hardly see anything on the screen. This happened to one monitor until it got so bad that it was thrown out. Now its replacement monitor is doing the same and started to do so after only a few days. What can cause this?

  • Answer:

    It sounds like bad power. Try installing a UPS that includes a voltage regulator at that location. If that helps, you need an electrician to check the wiring to the outlet.

If all the CRT monitors of different Brands like LG, Samsung, etc. are giving problem then definitely monitors are just ok. I think there can be 2 reasons for monitors to malfunction: A) Yours' power supply if continous on gensets or not using proper supply can be harming the monitors If this is the reason UPS or voltage regulators for PC's B) Check out if there is any magnetism effect near monitors which is found if you are near any High power carrying wires or working in any telecom company.
