Shift Command 3 to take a screen shot and create a png file of same on your desktop. Shift Command 4 to get a crosshair cursor - use to drag around the area you want to record only. Add Control to either of the above to create a file on the clipboard that you can paste into another document. Shift Command 4 followed by spacebar will give a camera cursor, move over any window, even if you can only see part of it, click and it will record that entire window. Finally, in Applications>Utilities folder is an app called Grab - you can use this for some additional features in screen shots.
