What is wrong with my computer when the screen completely goes black?

My computer screen goes black.?

  • The computer itself appears to be fine but when on the monitor when you start up the computer you can see the startup screen, then the welcome, and user screen for about two seconds and then the monitor goes to black. The monitor light is on like normal but the screen is completely black.

  • Answer:

It's an LCD so the problem is most likely the back-light inverter board. Take a flashlight and shine it directly into the screen from the front. Can you see the image on the screen now? If the image is there but you can't see it without the flashlight than the inverter board needs to be replaced. This is a VERY common problem.

Check your monitor connection to the back of the computer to make sure it is securely connected. Then replace the monitor with another one. If you rule out the monitor then you need to look at your video card. You can try to reseat it in the slot or if its a PCI card then you can try a different slot. You can also replace it or borrow another one to test it with.
