Why doesn't my laptop monitor turn on?

How to turn laptop into a monitor without taking it apart?

  • I have two laptops, my main one which uses vista, and the second laptop that I want to turn into a monitor that uses ubuntu desktop. I have a VGA cable connecting the two, but I can't seem to figure out how to get the second laptop to simply turn into an extended monitor for me first laptop. When I select "extend background on this monitor" on the first laptop, the second laptop doesn't do anything. Like the title says, I don't want to take it apart, but just leave it as it is. Post links or advice, thanks in advance!

  • Answer:

What you are trying to do is not possible, unless the laptop has VI/VO and even then it would not go through the VGA port. VGA ports on laptops are OUTPUT only, which is why what you are trying to do is not working.

you can't. the connector on any laptop is ONLY an output. It has no feed in. And you could blow the motherboard on either machine trying.

The software http://www.maxivista.com can turn your laptop into a second monitor.
